How to Convert PPM to PCX

PPM, part of the Netpbm family from the late 1980s, stores data completely uncompressed, while PCX, dating back to ZSoft's PC Paintbrush in 1985, applies RLE (run-length encoding) compression that works particularly well on images with large flat-color areas. Converting PPM to PCX is mainly about compatibility with legacy software or older imaging tools that specifically expect PCX rather than PPM as input.

Since PCX applies at least some compression while PPM doesn't, expect the converted file to typically be smaller for content with flat color regions, though detailed or photographic images may not compress as efficiently.
